Zombie Apocalypse Survival Kit

pleasestandby

There I was, wandering the chaotic aisles of week-before-Christmas shopping, contemplating what tasty treats, handy kitchen gadget or frivolous trivet I would contribute to my family’s first ever* Christmas gift exchange, when I had an epiphanerd (epiphany + nerd; though if you didn’t get it already there’s really no point explaining).

As much as a scrapbooking organizer or food dehydrator would appeal to the OCD foodies I’m related to, I chose to bestow on mi familia the gift that truly keeps on giving. Yes, with my selection of a convenient camping tote, a few essentials from the travel aisle and dollar store, a good book and informative viewing, one lucky family member would have everything he or she would need to survive impending doom with a brand new Zombie Apocalypse Survival Kit.

Of course, no nerdtastic gift is complete without an owner’s manual, so I threw together the one you see here with a full list of the kit’s contents and a few practical pointers. Given more time, I would have customized the packaging of all the items, but pre-holiday publishing deadlines kept me a bit busy, so the customization only got as far as a Sharpie addition to one of the items (replicated version at end of post).

Feel free to replicate this kit (for non-commercial use only of course—don’t be a jerk) to prepare yourself and your loved and/or mostly-tolerated ones for whatever lies ahead. Or send me your best Zombie Apocalypse Survival Kit addition and I’ll give you an editable version of the owner’s manual ready for your customization.

And remember, machetes don’t run out of bullets.

[This is the part where I pretend that my totally off-topic blog post is tangentially related to the design world...]

While you’re in zombie survival mode, if you’re of the web design and development persuasion, check out the brilliantly-titled “Zombie Apocalypse of Devices Preparedness 101” workshop presented by Jason Grigsby of Cloud Four at the New York edition of WebVisions. Sounds fun!

*<rant> Despite the all-too-common usage of the phrase “First Annual…” there is no such thing as a “first annual” anything. It’s not an annual event until it has actually occurred a second time! </rant>
